Resume Won'T Upload

Resume Won'T Upload

You’re trying to apply for a job online, and you hit a wall. The platform asks you to upload your resume, so you go to attach the file, and nothing happens. Or worse, you get some random error message that doesn’t even tell you what’s wrong. Sound familiar? Let’s fix it.

First, check the basics. Is your resume in the right format? Most systems like PDF or Word files. If you’re trying to upload something unusual, like a Pages file or a Google Doc link, it’s probably not going to work. Save it as a PDF (or a Word doc if the listing specifically asks for that) and try again. Easy enough, right?

Another thing to check: file size. Most platforms have a limit, typically around 1MB or 2MB. If you’ve got a ton of graphics or fancy formatting, your file might be too big. Simplifying the design not only reduces the size but also makes it easier for applicant tracking systems (ATS) to read. Double win.

Still stuck? Think about the file name. Weirdly, some systems can’t handle special characters or spaces in a file name. So if your resume is called "John_Doe_#Resume!@$%2023. pdf, " that might be causing the issue. Rename it to something simple like "John_Doe_Resume. pdf" and try again.

If you’re using a really old browser, or an outdated version of one, that could be the problem too. Some application systems don’t play well with older tech. Updating your browser or switching to a different one (Chrome and Firefox usually work fine) might solve the issue.

And then there’s the platform itself. Sometimes the issue isn’t you at all, it’s them. Online application systems are famously glitchy. If you’ve tried everything on your end, consider reaching out to the employer directly. A quick email saying, "I’m having trouble uploading my resume to your system, can I email it to you directly?" can go a long way. It shows initiative, and most recruiters will appreciate that you didn’t just give up.

By the way, don’t let this kind of hiccup derail you. Errors like this feel annoying in the moment, but they’re usually easy to fix. And if you do need to contact the employer about it, don’t overthink how that makes you look. Everyone has had tech issues at some point. They’ll get it.

So, try these steps. Fix the file format, trim the size, rename it, update your browser, or email the employer. One of those will get your resume where it needs to go. And if you’re still stuck after all that? Maybe it’s a sign to take a coffee break before giving it another shot.
