Why Is My Resume Not Uploading

Why Is My Resume Not Uploading

You've spent hours getting your resume ready, you go to upload it, and. . . nothing. It doesn't load. Or you get some cryptic error message. Frustrating, right? Let's look at why this happens and how you can fix it without pulling your hair out.

File formats can trip you up

First thing to check? File format. Some job application systems only accept certain types of files. The most common ones are PDF, Word (. doc or . docx), and sometimes plain text (. txt). If your resume is in some other format, like Pages from Apple or a weird template file, it might be the problem. Honestly, PDF is usually your safest bet because it keeps your formatting intact no matter where it's opened.

And while we're talking about formatting, double-check the size of the file. Some systems have file size limits, like 2MB or less. If you've got high-res images or extra graphics in your resume, it could push the file size over that limit. Just strip out anything unnecessary and see if that helps.

Naming your file matters too

Look, I know this sounds minor, but some systems reject files based on their names. If your file name has special characters like %, #, @, or even spaces, it could cause an upload error. Stick to something simple, like "JohnDoeResume. pdf" or "Resume2023. pdf. " No emojis, no random punctuation, nothing weird.

Another tip? Make sure the file name actually matches what you're uploading. If the job site is looking for a resume and you accidentally upload a cover letter or some other file, that’s obviously not going to work.

Technical glitches on the platform

Sometimes, it's not even your fault. Job sites and applicant tracking systems can have bugs. Maybe their server is down or there’s a temporary issue with the upload function. If you suspect this, try refreshing the page, clearing your browser cache, or using a different browser altogether. Chrome works best most of the time, but if that fails, give Edge or Firefox a shot.

Also, make sure your internet connection is stable. Uploading a file can time out if your connection is spotty. If you're trying it on your phone while sitting in a coffee shop with bad Wi-Fi, maybe wait until you're somewhere with a stronger signal.

Your resume might be flagged

Okay, this is rare, but it happens. Some systems scan resumes for viruses or harmful content, and if they detect anything weird, your file won’t upload. If you’ve downloaded free templates or fancy fonts from sketchy sites, there’s a chance the file might be flagged, even if it looks totally fine to you. Run a quick virus scan on your computer and re-save your resume without any extras.

When all else fails

If nothing's working, don’t waste hours banging your head against your keyboard. Look for a contact email or number on the job site. Let them know you're having trouble uploading your resume and ask for a workaround. Sometimes they'll give you an email to send it directly or suggest a different way to apply. This actually happens more often than you'd think, so don't feel awkward about reaching out.
